I really do believe ladies that we need to encourage our daughter’s relationship with their father. If you have a good husband who is a Godly father be so grateful. This is not the case in every household in America today so if you are part of the households who have this blessing, thank God for your daughter’s daddy.

Encourage their relationship, step back even if you have to in order to allow their relationship to thrive. To this day, I know that my daddy is part of the reason I am the person I am today. He is still a very wise counsel for me.

I am so blessed! This week, I was flooded with God’s blessings. I hope that you too can look back on the previous week and be able to say, “I am so blessed.” One of my most exciting happenings of this past week was meeting Cindy Rushton of Rushton Family Ministries. As Cindy said, “we are kindred spirits.” I truly believe this and I believe this meeting was a “divine connection” that God pre-planned for both of us. I am excited about the opportunities that working with Cindy will bring to me. First, I will be joining Cindy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 for her Talk-A-Latte Chat Please join us at 1pm CST or you may visit the archives there on the website after the show! Details are below. We will be discussing Quiet Times for our children. Time alone with God is so important for our children and us. You won’t want to miss this! I will post more details below.

Another blessing is that today I will be speaking locally at the Memorial Day Sing for Promised Quartet. Promised is a Southern Gospel quartet of which one of my good friends Melanie Woods is a part. You can visit Promised website at http://www.promisedqt.com . They have a CD being released TODAY! I’m sure you can find the details on their website! Anyway, I will be speaking about my ministry at their Annual Memorial Day sing held in Coila, MS at Coila Baptist Church. Therefore, if you’re in the area come on out from 10am-4pm. BBQ lunch will be sold on the grounds! Admission is FREE!

Some Keys to Quiet Time

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

Keys to Quiet Time:

?Find a special place to have it.
?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.

Hello Everyone!

This is the time of year when you really begin to count your blessings. If you haven’t, done so already stop and count your blessings. Most likely if you’re receiving this ezine you have children. I’m also sure that you believe that children are a blessing from the Lord. However, do you believe that you should in turn be a blessing to your children? We really do need to evaluate the way that we parent our children, we are the only parents that they will ever have. Your daughter will not have another mother to set a good example for her as a wife, a mom and a woman, so we must do the best that we can in this life that we lead. Your daughter will soon become a wife and mom herself, for some of you this may come sooner than you think.
As Christmas is fast approaching, I hope you are taking time to spend “quality time” with your daughters and/or other children passing down traditions and blessings to them.

Hello Everyone!

I am going to begin with a sincere apology to you, my readers. I have been major behind on all my duties with Beauty by Design Ministries and Mom-Daughter Connection Radio show. But, lucky for me, I have a good excuse, or two. The last edition of this ezine went out the Monday before Thanksgiving, this was the last time I remember thinking clearly, and even then not completely clear. Every since the last week or so in October when my kids both came down with sinus infections and inner ear issues I have been behind. Soon after I came down with the same thing, and surprisingly enough I still have a sinus infection, but there is more.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, my husband and I got some unexpected news. We discovered I am expecting child #3. Yes ma’am. I am pregnant, again! My baby, Lily is only 8 months old, she’ll be 9 months on Dec. 16. The new baby is 8 weeks along and I am due on July 13, 2008. We are happy though it was an unexpected surprise that we had definitely not planned for.

What about you? Did you have a great Thanksgiving? We had more to be thankful for than we thought during ours. Honestly, I have a lot to be thankful for as I got pregnant or was considered higher risk because I had an IUD though apparently it had been lost. This is why I got pregnant, however if they had found that I had indeed gotten pregnant with it still in place there could have been many complications, therefore I am glad it was missing. That is my thanksgiving praise.

I also know that God has a plan. This week I finally also completed another Mom-Daughter Connection Radio Show. It will be up for your listening pleasure today. It is entitled, “Being Set Apart for God”. God does set up apart for his purposes if we choose to follow his lead. I encourage you and your daughter to listen in on this as you learn more about Queen Esther and how she was set apart for God and how you can encourage your daughter to be set apart as well.
Also, I haven’t forgotten the Prayer Journaling Ecourse and plan to launch this in the New Year; maybe you can make it your New Year’s Resolution to begin prayer journaling. Sorry, for the delay on the newsletter, I have been sick, and I’m still a little sluggish honestly. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. The week of Thanksgiving, which I am truly Thankful for, because I love Thanksgiving and all it brings, time with family, good food, a time to reflect and give thanks.

For this week, I just want to say that I hope that you will show your thanks to the LORD for all that he does for and gives to us, the many blessings of life. Make sure you instill in your daughter this feeling of gratitude. It is so important. Other than that, I just hope that you have a Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless you and your family.

Some Keys to Quiet Time

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

Keys to Quiet Time:

?Find a special place to have it.
?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.

Well, the bug has hit our house. Over the past week and a half to two weeks everyone but my husband has been sick, so you know what that means, he’s next! I am still battling this mess, so I am a little slow sending out this week’s ezine.

I am so blessed! This week, I was flooded with God’s blessings. I hope that you too can look back on the previous week and be able to say, “I am so blessed.” One of my most exciting happenings of this past week was meeting Cindy Rushton of Rushton Family Ministries. As Cindy said, “we are kindred spirits.” I truly believe this and I believe this meeting was a “divine connection” that God pre-planned for both of us. I am excited about the opportunities that working with Cindy will bring to me. First, I will be joining Cindy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 for her Talk-A-Latte Chat Please join us at 1pm CST or you may visit the archives there on the website after the show! Details are below. We will be discussing Quiet Times for our children. Time alone with God is so important for our children and us. You won’t want to miss this! I will post more details below.

Another blessing is that today I will be speaking locally at the Memorial Day Sing for Promised Quartet. Promised is a Southern Gospel quartet of which one of my good friends Melanie Woods is a part. You can visit Promised website at http://www.promisedqt.com . They have a CD being released TODAY! I’m sure you can find the details on their website! Anyway, I will be speaking about my ministry at their Annual Memorial Day sing held in Coila, MS at Coila Baptist Church. Therefore, if you’re in the area come on out from 10am-4pm. Hello Everyone!

Well, I don’t know about you, but I have been in dire need of a “break” and that’s just what I had this weekend. Some girlfriends and I had planned to attend the Extraordinary Women’s Conference at First Baptist Church, Jackson, MS for a while, and the weekend finally arrived. On Friday, 4 of my closest friends and I loaded up in one of their SUV’s and headed 100 miles south of where we live to the conference and to an overnight stay in a hotel without kids, husbands or laundry. Can I hear a “Whoo hooo”?? It was a great weekend and gave me the “rejuvenation” and refreshment I sooo needed.

What do you as a mom do for rejuvenation and refreshment? I know we all need it. So, I encourage you as a mom to take some much needed time to yourself. You may not go for an overnight weekend away with the girls like I did, but you can go away to the bathroom to soak in the tub for an hour. It is important, so do it for you today.

Teaching your daughter to take care of herself and her body can easily be started by your setting an example for her. I know that I learned so much from the example of my mother in my life. Be conscious of the example you set for your daughter.

Tonight, (Saturday) I’m headed to do a little girl’s 11th birthday party. A Pampering PJ Party, I have so many goodies all fixed up for the girls and lots of fun in store! I will also have a short time of devotion with the girls about the importance of taking care of your body, God’s temple. This little girl is special to me because my husband and I taught her in 3, 4 and 5 year old Sunday School. Ohhh I can’t believe she’ll be 11. They grow up fast!

Some Keys to Quiet Time

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

Keys to Quiet Time:

?Find a special place to have it.
?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.

Hello Everyone!
Do you ever just feel down in the dumps? I have been suffering from that the past week or so. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong for a while, and then it hit me. I was being attacked, spiritually that is by Satan himself. Satan doesn’t want God to win; he doesn’t want God to be in control of my life. So, if he gets the best of me he knows I’ll be too upset to do God’s will.
This mood hit me in the area of my confidence. Think about your daughter. Does she struggle with issues of self-confidence and self-esteem? Most likely she does. It is a typical issue with tweens and teens. Be sure to be an encourager to your daughter boosting her self esteem often. Good boosts include encouraging her to participate in activities she loves. Whether that be singing, painting, a sport, or going on a rafting trip.
Another topic I encountered this week that is a toughie for teens is abstinence. I actually spoke on this topic on Saturday night. Talking to your teen about sex is important. Satan is after the hearts and lives of our young people and sex is one area of their lives, which he knows how to weasel his way into. Hello Everyone!

Fall has fallen this week here in Mississippi, finally! I was soo ready for some cooler weather and finally it is here. I hope the weather is nice where you are.

So, with the change of seasons and the cooling of temperatures comes the changing of clothes, or at least the type of clothes you will be wearing. I did a “fall cleaning” out of my closet just this week. I decided that many of my clothes were either unfit to wear, or didn’t fit. Therefore, I had to get rid of many things. One of the pluses to this was most of my jeans were in excellent, barely worn condition as I bought several pairs just before finding out I was pregnant with my little girl, therefore, I am selling those on EBAY! I can’t wait to see how much I get for them.

So, now it’s time to go clothes shopping! That should be fun right? Well, maybe, if I can find some decent clothes out there to wear. Have you been shopping lately? The styles are not so “modest dresser friendly”. I believe we, as Christians should dress a certain way, in a more modest way. I am so blessed! This week, I was flooded with God’s blessings. I hope that you too can look back on the previous week and be able to say, “I am so blessed.” One of my most exciting happenings of this past week was meeting Cindy Rushton of Rushton Family Ministries. As Cindy said, “we are kindred spirits.” I truly believe this and I believe this meeting was a “divine connection” that God pre-planned for both of us. I am excited about the opportunities that working with Cindy will bring to me. First, I will be joining Cindy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 for her Talk-A-Latte Chat Please join us at 1pm CST or you may visit the archives there on the website after the show! Details are below. We will be discussing Quiet Times for our children. Time alone with God is so important for our children and us. You won’t want to miss this! I will post more details below.

Another blessing is that today I will be speaking locally at the Memorial Day Sing for Promised Quartet. Promised is a Southern Gospel quartet of which one of my good friends Melanie Woods is a part. Anyway, I will be speaking about my ministry at their Annual Memorial Day sing held in Coila, MS at Coila Baptist Church. Therefore, if you’re in the area come on out from 10am-4pm. And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. Hello Everyone!

The weather here is finally cooling down. It is actually in the 60’s tonight and feels ohhh sooo good. I hope the weather is nice where you are. I myself love fall, it is absolutely my favorite season of the year. It reminds me of my childhood, my teen years, school and the like. I can walk outside on a fall morning and mistakenly think I smell the smell of pencil shavings or my first perfume, Vanilla Fields on my wrists. It takes me back and I love that!

What about you? What is your favorite time of the year and what memory does it conjure up? Are you helping your daughter to create such memories? Are you encouraging her to cherish the times that she is now experiencing? Her teen years are an important part of her life. Did you know that during the teen years especially age 18-19 that girls make the most important decisions of their life, including where they will attend college.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

Keys to Quiet Time:

?Find a special place to have it.
?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.

It’s back to school time… have you listened to last week’s Back to School Podcast? I sure had a great time doing that show. Then I spent some time last week looking up some of the latest fashions and I posted a blog about it at Beauty By Design. This week I have been thinking a lot about the important role we have as parents. Parenting is a “hard job” and I sure want to know that I am “doing my best”. One of the most important things we as parents can do, I believe, is pray for our children. Every night this week, as my oldest has started school I have prayed for him and things that he encounters specifically. I think that specific prayers for our children are important. I hope you are praying for your teen or tween in this most difficult time of their lives. I know my momma prayed for me and it has made a ton of difference.

Hello Everyone!

Do you lead a simple life? On the other hand, do you run, run, run and never slow down, never stopping to “smell the roses” or in my case, “enjoy the children”. This next week my calendar is jam-packed. Is it my choice whether or not to put something on my calendar? Well yes of course it is. Life is all about choices we have to choose when to say “yes” and when to just let something go, or say firmly, “no” and that is tough.

Teaching your daughter to say no is important as well, not only will she need to in order to not get too busy, but she will also need to learn to in the face of temptation. This week I’m going to begin working on a new guide for helping your daughter to say “no”. This jam-packed guide will help you to guide your daughter into standing firm in her choice to say “no”. Be looking for more information on this guide to come out by the end of September.

Another thing that is in the works for Beauty By Design Ministries and Mom-Daughter Connection is a special blog for the girls, your teens and tweens. I am going to be launching a new blog just for them with articles, devotions and resources just for teens. There will also be an “Ask Alyssa”section as well as my calendar of events, and links for teens to connect with me via Facebook or MySpace. I am very excited about this and hope to launch it by the end of October.

Next week ladies, I will be on vacation! Whoo hoo! My hubby, son, daughter and I are going to be heading to Gatlinburg, TN. Therefore, I will not be sending out the ezine next week, however, do check in on Tuesday, September 11 to hear a new podcast at http://mom-daughterconnection.com

I am so blessed! This week, I was flooded with God’s blessings. I hope that you too can look back on the previous week and be able to say, “I am so blessed.” One of my most exciting happenings of this past week was meeting Cindy Rushton of Rushton Family Ministries. As Cindy said, “we are kindred spirits.” I truly believe this and I believe this meeting was a “divine connection” that God pre-planned for both of us. I am excited about the opportunities that working with Cindy will bring to me. First, I will be joining Cindy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 for her Talk-A-Latte Chat Please join us at 1pm CST or you may visit the archives there on the website after the show! Details are below. We will be discussing Quiet Times for our children. Time alone with God is so important for our children and us. You won’t want to miss this! I will post more details below.

Another blessing is that today I will be speaking locally at the Memorial Day Sing for Promised Quartet. Promised is a Southern Gospel quartet of which one of my good friends Melanie Woods is a part. Anyway, I will be speaking about my ministry at their Annual Memorial Day sing held in Coila, MS at Coila Baptist Church. Therefore, if you’re in the area come on out from 10am-4pm. Some Keys to Quiet Time

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

Hello Everyone!
Well, my week last week turned out much different than I had expected. We got to New Orleans, got terribly lost and quite rattled with our nerves, my grandmother made herself sick she was so nervous so we ended up coming home early. What a mess! I did learn a thing or two from the experience. One of which is that God will be in control whether you like it or not. I’m not saying I didn’t want him in control, but I feel that after I did everything that I had not prayed about the situation enough. I just feel God took over and said, “Alyssa, the timing isn’t right, you need to do this some other time.” So, that’s what will happen.
Timing is an important thing in our lives. I believe just as the Bible says that there is a “time for everything.” I don’t believe in good luck or good karma or whatever else there might be out there, but I do believe that God’s timing is best and that sometimes His timing and our timing do not align and that it is best for us to succumb to his plans rather than trying to be in control.
One of the things my parents always told me was in God’s hands was when I would meet my future mate. I wanted so badly from a fairly young age to know who I would marry. I think that is something every young girl fantasizes about at one point or another. If I had rushed things, I could have easily ended up in the wrong relationship. Hello Everyone!

Do you ever just feel down in the dumps? I have been suffering from that the past week or so. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong for a while, and then it hit me. I was being attacked, spiritually that is by Satan himself. Satan doesn’t want God to win; he doesn’t want God to be in control of my life. So, if he gets the best of me he knows I’ll be too upset to do God’s will.

This mood hit me in the area of my confidence. Think about your daughter. Does she struggle with issues of self-confidence and self-esteem? Most likely she does. It is a typical issue with tweens and teens. Be sure to be an encourager to your daughter boosting her self esteem often. Good boosts include encouraging her to participate in activities she loves. Whether that be singing, painting, a sport, or going on a rafting trip.

Another topic I encountered this week that is a toughie for teens is abstinence. I actually spoke on this topic on Saturday night. Talking to your teen about sex is important. Satan is after the hearts and lives of our young people and sex is one area of their lives, which he knows how to weasel his way into. This week I’ll be out of town taking two workshops at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I’m excited about being with the ladies there. This week God has truly been speaking to my heart. One of the things he has really been encouraging me about is “change.” We all face “changes” in our lives. Hello Everyone!
Lately it seems that I am constantly excited. I like that, excitement is good right? It keeps you going. I love having things to look forward to; I think that we all do. Right now, I am looking forward to several things. One of which is my upcoming online seminar. Yes, Beauty By Design Ministries and Mom-Daughter Connection are going to offer our first online seminar for moms. It will be, “Teaching Your Daughter to Give of Herself, Her Talents and Her Time.” This topic was inspired by the stewardship clinic I am speaking at Sunday, July 8 and Monday, July 9.
The studying and preparing I have done for this speaking engagement has truly blessed me and inspired me to want to share this with you. So, I hope that you will sign up to attend our online seminar. It will be an audio/visual seminar held in an online conference room. It is set for Tuesday, July 24 from 8-10 pm EST. Be expecting a follow-up email this week regarding this seminar with more details!
Another time that I am looking forward to is an upcoming workshop I am going to be taking at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. You see I am finishing up my Master’s Degree in Christian Education from there and need several classes to graduate. I will be getting two more out of the way the week of July 30. I am looking forward to learning more. I truly do love learning.
Then, I wanted to reflect back on the many blessings God has given me the past few weeks. One of which is the launch of my radio show, Mom-Daughter Connection Radio Show and Podcast. Hello Everyone!
I had a great weekend, spent the day cleaning on Saturday. I’ve also been preparing for an upcoming speaking engagement I have on Stewardship, giving not only of our monies, but also our time and our talent. I’m looking forward to it. I am learning a lot myself in the process of preparing for it.
I spent some time with one of the former members of my youth group this week. She reminded me of the day I took her shopping back when she first started in the youth group. I remembered that I did that to make sure that she knew she was important to me. Spending time with her one-on-one allowed me to get to know her better, but it also allowed her to get to know me better. What I am most proud of about my relationship with her is that she has been influenced by some of my more “positive” habits. Habits such as taking sermon notes in church on Sunday mornings, writing in a journal during her quiet time, and making church a priority over her other activities. These are things I modeled for her and I am so proud of her for doing them.
You may not think as your daughter’s mom that she is paying any attention to your habits both good and bad, but you’d be surprised, she is. Studies show that parents have the greatest influence upon their children, more than peers, teachers, or even “youth ministers” like me.

Do you respect your daughter’s father, your husband, and your partner in life? It is very important that we show respect to our mates, setting an example for our daughters. The respect which I am referring to is a noun which is defined by Dictionary.com as an “esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person.” The Bible speaks of this in Ephesians 5:33, “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” It is so important that we respect and love each other as husband and wife. This is one of the most important ways that you can be an example to your children and makes them feel loved.
I remember my parents working together as a team in parenting my brother and I. My mom never made a decision without the input of my dad. My mom and dad’s most famous works were, “go ask your mother” or “go ask your father” but we always ended up asking them both. That’s just how things worked in our house. My dad was infamous for his “meetings” with my mother to discuss things before answering us. Through this, I witness my parents respect for one another. I believe that this helped me to be a person of respect and a confident person.
Do you not want your daughter to be a person of respect that not only has respect for others but for herself as well? By witnessing the example of your relationship with her father, she will gain knowledge of what it means to respect yourself and others.
During this week following Father’s Day, think about how you are influencing your daughter by your relationship with her father. See if there are any areas where you need to work on your relationship, study the Scriptures for guidance on how you can improve and apply those teachings to your life.

Hello Everyone!
As usual, life is busy. How can life not be busy for the mother of a 3 year old and an almost 3 month old? If anyone out there knows how to make things less hectic around my house please email me your tips! J
Even though we are busy, we’re also blessed. This week, I have spent much time with friends, my husband and kids and enjoyed myself thoroughly. My husband, Greg, has been umpiring ballgames at the local recreation park and the kids and I have been going out to watch two of my best friends little boys play tee ball. My son Baker has enjoyed playing with his friends and watching the ballgames. More than that, he enjoys the concession stand. He was lucky too that his Granny provided some pocket change for him to feed his wishes.
I hope every one of you is enjoying this time in your life. We should all be grateful for every moment that God gives to us.

Giving God the Glory

How many times a day does God bless us? If we really stopped to think about it, the number is probably unfathomable. Yesterday God sent several large blessings into my life. I was so excited and so hyped up by what the blessings meant for me that I failed to stop and thank Him for them. Last night after going to bed I could not sleep, I tossed and turned, I got too hot and felt sick at my stomach. I even got leg cramps. Everything was keeping me awake.

The thought had crossed my mind just before bed; “You have not done your journaling, quiet time and Bible study today”. However, I felt that I was tired, it was late and I could wait until this morning. God disagreed, I believe, because He literally kept me up most of the night. I probably would have been better off to get up and do those things and went back to bed. However, I did not; so I suffered. Maybe you agree with me. Maybe you do not. Nevertheless, I believe God can do this. He can do anything He wants. Why would He not want to wake me up, encourage me, remind me that it was He that gave me those blessings yesterday.

God blesses us everyday using even the smallest of things. The warm water coming from our showers in the morning, the glow of the moonlight on our children’s faces as we tuck them in at night, the feeling that you get when you see someone you love coming up the driveway from work. All these things are blessings that God chooses to allow us to have, rather than taking away. He could have easily taken those things away He gave me yesterday. Instead of allowing them to remain a part of my life, however, He did not.

You can bet that this morning one of my first tasks was to praise Him, thank Him and give Him the glory for what He has done in my life, both yesterday, today and everyday. Moreover, I know He will continue because He is faithful.

Are you giving God the glory for His blessings in your life? I am looking forward to those blessings with eagerness, because I have seen God shower them into my life so many times before. How about you, are you prepared for the rain?

Hello Everyone!
When it rains, it pours, right? Well, we did have a good bit of rain this past week here in Mississippi, but it was a refreshing and much needed rain. It also rained in the way that God pours out his blessings. Yes, more blessings came about this week. At the Memorial Day Sing, I attended last Monday; I connected with two ladies who booked events for their churches. My calendar is just about full from now until October! Exciting!

Did your momma teach you good manners?
“Yes, ma’am”, “No ma’am”, “Thank you”, “No thank you.” Are these words common practice in your day-to-day life? I have had so many conversations lately with ladies where they will ask me to stop saying, “yes ma’am” because we are close in age. I have also had conversations with older people who were surprised by my saying those things. The simple fact is, unfortunately good manners are not common practice in today’s society. This is sad, good manners are like a good name, a part of our character that should be Christ-like.
There are other areas of life that this applies to, I have always been taught to be grateful for what others do for you and in return to show your appreciation through the written word. I am the queen of Thank you notes. I believe that a short well written thank you note is sure to make someone feel appreciated for their deeds or actions. Showing gratitude in even the smallest of circumstances makes a real impact on those around you and helps them to see your Godly character shining through.
When doing some research online about this topic, one of the manners that I came across that many people today seem to hold up in importance is for children to not talk while adults are talking. Also, for us as adults even to not interrupt each other when talking. I am sure we have all encountered both situations and agree that good manners are important.
I think it is our duty as mothers of a new generation to teach our children these things. Hold up in importance the daily practices that we so often have let go by the wayside these days. Godly respect is important and should be made a priority. We are called to “train up a child in the way that they should go.” Going with good manners will help them a great deal in the days ahead. It is our duty as parents to instill in our children good practices.

That’s right, we’re starting a podcast, or two! J We are launching Mom-Daughter Connection Radio Show, for moms and Christian Girl Talk Radio Show, for girls. These will be available as an mp3 download on our website, and available to listen to on our website or via Itunes at http://itunes.com if you’d like to download it to your IPOD or MP3 and take us on the go with you! If you don’t have Itunes it is a free download from their website.
Mom Daughter Connection Radio Show will launch Tuesday, July 3 and Christian Girl Talk Radio Show will launch, Tuesday, August 7. Each of these shows will run bi-weekly, or every other week. Once both are started, we will have one, one week and one the next. I hope everyone will look forward to tuning in.
Mom Daughter Connection will touch those topic that we as mom’s struggle to deal with our daughters about, and Christian Girl Talk will give teens a place to hear about Christian activities and ideas that can help make them set apart for Christ, teaching them that it’s ok to be different.

Hello Everyone!
I am so blessed! This week, I was flooded with God’s blessings. I hope that you too can look back on the previous week and be able to say, “I am so blessed.” One of my most exciting happenings of this past week was meeting Cindy Rushton of Rushton Family Ministries. As Cindy said, “we are kindred spirits.” I truly believe this and I believe this meeting was a “divine connection” that God pre-planned for both of us. I am excited about the opportunities that working with Cindy will bring to me. First, I will be joining Cindy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 for her Talk-A-Latte Chat Please join us at 1pm CST or you may visit the archives there on the website after the show! Details are below. We will be discussing Quiet Times for our children. Time alone with God is so important for our children and us. You won’t want to miss this! I will post more details below.
Another blessing is that today I will be speaking locally at the Memorial Day Sing for Promised Quartet. Promised is a Southern Gospel quartet of which one of my good friends Melanie Woods is a part. You can visit Promised website at http://www.promisedqt.com . They have a CD being released TODAY! I’m sure you can find the details on their website! Anyway, I will be speaking about my ministry at their Annual Memorial Day sing held in Coila, MS at Coila Baptist Church. Therefore, if you’re in the area come on out from 10am-4pm. Some Keys to Quiet Time
Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.
The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.
Keys to Quiet Time:
§ Find a special place to have it.
§ Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
§ Set aside a specific time each day.
§ Be prepared to hear from God.

Hello Everyone!
Yesterday was Mother’s Day. My first one with two children but my fourth official Mother’s day as a mom, what a blessed privilege. I remember when my first child, my son was born, how I thought of what being a mother meant, that giant responsibility that the role gave me. I went from being only responsible for myself, and my own life, to being responsible for two lives, one of which was new and needy.
Now, three years later I am responsible for three lives, as a baby girl has joined us in our family. Thinking of it in those terms makes it sound even a bit scary. It is true we do have a great responsibility and a great influence over the lives of our children. As mothers, we want what’s best for our children, but sometimes do we think what is best is what we would choose for them instead of allowing them to explore what it is that God has out there for them? Contemplate this as you read this week’s article, Allow Your Daughter to Seek Her Dreams, Not Yours.
For those of you who may have missed the announcement, we have a new home; Mom-Daughter Connection is now being sent out weekly by WAHMCart rather than via the Yahoo Group. Allow Your Daughter to Seek Her Dreams, Not Yours

I knew at the age of 16 that I was passionate about Jesus, and beauty and fashion, but could I turn that into a career. Maybe. My mom and dad thought it would be safer to be a counselor, and began encouraging me to pursue the education necessary to be a licensed counselor. Unfortunately, it is not my passion or my dream. For several years, however, I pursued the field of counseling one hundred percent. I went through many graduate school applications and grueling interviews. I was accepted to three different graduate school programs. I even took several classes in one particular program, only to realize more and more that it was not my calling or my passion.
Well known Christian author Max Lucado suggests in his work, The Cure for the Common Life that instead of asking our children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” a better question would be “How can I help you become what God has already designed you to be?” You see, God designed me for a special purpose, to be a specific thing, and he has done that for each individual on the face of this earth, so it is important that we are allowed to be what it is God designed for us to be.
God set his plan for each of us in motion the day that we were born. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” We are all as Christians certain of that great plan, that story of our life.
We all have a story, and as we live our lives, we are living out our story. We must also allow our children to live their story. Lucado says STORY stands for:

S – our strengths, those things that we do well,
T – our topics, the things we are most interested in,
O – our optimal conditions, the conditions in which we do our best work, perform to the best of our ability,
R – our relationships, those with whom we share and learn from,
Y – and our yes moments, those primary outcomes that bring us the most joy.

We must allow our daughters to live out their very own story. A card I got recently as congratulations on my new baby girl said this,

“She will dream her very own dreams, Maybe she will look like you, talk like you, smile like you … maybe she’ll sing, paint and dance like you, but she’ll dream her very own dreams.”

Dreams are important, they give us something to look forward to with anticipation. I know you had your own dreams, now allow your daughter to not only have hers, but to live them out. Be her biggest cheerleader and watch her win at this game we call life. Help her along the way with words of encouragement, many hugs and love and even some discipline if it is in order. However, do not discourage your daughter from living out her dreams. God gave them to her and it is important that she follows His path for her life. You can be assured that if she is following God, that there are many plans in her heart, but the Lord is directing her steps.

Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone had an enjoyable week and weekend. Yesterday, my baby girl, Lily was dedicated to the Lord in the Baby Dedication Service at our church. It is amazing that it feels just like yesterday that I was dedicating my baby boy, Baker, who is now 3 years old. Wow how time flies. I bet you ladies who have older children can tell me even more so how fast the time goes by as you watch your child complete milestone after milestone, grade after grade in school, and as each year passes and you watch them grow.
This school year is ending here where I live. The busy days of school are ending, and the carefree days of summer are beginning. How will you and your daughter spend these carefree summer days together? This week’s ezine will help you think of ways that you can spend time with your daughter this summer! Enjoy!

Do you celebrate the milestones in your daughter’s life? Last October I had the privilege of speaking at a girl’s thirteen-year-old birthday party. Since I knew her personally, I wrote a speech specifically for her. As I prepared I thought back over how it felt to turn thirteen and I reminisced over my memories of the time, both good and not so good. Some of the things that I remembered about myself at thirteen were:
· I was BOY CRAZY!
· I got my first hair cut the way I wanted, instead of the way my parents wanted.
· I tried out for cheerleader and I did not make it.
· I lost my first grandparent.
All of these things were an important part of my life. They all had an effect on who I am and who I have become as a person. They could all be considered a milestone. Whether good or not so good these milestones should be cherished because the have an impact on your daughter’s life. Hers will most likely be very different from mine, but they will be unique to her and special for that reason and many other reasons. This can apply to your daughter no matter what age she is now. We all experience milestones in almost every year of life. I’m sure right along with your daughter you are experiencing some yourself. Now, why not celebrate them?, Yes, I said celebrate, I think this is something we do not do enough of; we just take times for granted in our lives.
Celebrate that your daughter just completed another year of school, maybe she made all A’s maybe she did not, but I’m sure you can find something to celebrate. Go for it!

Lots of excitement going on for Beauty By Design Ministries. My website has been totally revamped. This Sunday I attended a Memorial service at a little old country church where my great grandmother attended church. They no longer have regular services just one service a year to remember those loved ones buried in the cemetery there. I have gone to this service, the first Sunday in May for my whole life, it is a tradition. Do you have traditions in your family? Building traditions, memories, of one’s life are so important. Traditions

Traditions, defined by the Wikipedia online dictionary as a Latin word that mean literally means to “hand down”, it is the handing down of customs and beliefs. There are many traditions in our world. Religious traditions exist in almost every religious organization. We also have family traditions. I’m sure your family might have some that are similar to those that my family celebrated, and some that are quite possibly very different.
Some of our traditions include, Sunday lunch at my grandmother’s house when I was a kid, Easter egg hunts with all my cousins at my great-grandmother’s house, attending a candlelight Lord’s supper on Christmas Eve at church, or a 4th of July cookout. All of these things were ways of celebrating together, and more often than not a good excuse to eat, no I’m just kidding. But, traditions are valuable in one’s life and something we do not easily forget or allow to let go. They are also Biblical. ForeverFamilies.net says, “Some traditions are based on God’s commandments, such as praying before meals.” Can you think of others, such as saying bedtime prayers with your children? Starting traditions help us to connect and define what is important to us.
Family scholars Nick Stinnett and John DeFrain say that traditions are the “we always” of families, like “We always make snow ice cream at the first snowfall,” or “We always have games and popcorn on Saturday night.” Because such traditions have meaning that is special to an individual family, they create feelings of warmth and closeness. By spending time together in a fun and special setting, family members grow closer.
Traditions can be simple, and the more simple they are the more likely you are to stick to them. Remember when creating new traditions that the point of a tradition is to be able to stick to it and practice it over and over, so make sure it is something you can easily do year after year. Some simple examples of traditions include, making a family members favorite meal for their birthday, saying a prayer together every night before bed, baking cookies together on Christmas Eve, or calling long distance relatives on Valentine’s Day to tell them you love them.

I’m sure this has gotten you to thinking about what your traditions are and how you can pass them on to your daughter, instilling in her the importance of family, and of building traditions into one’s daily life as a way to stay connected.

I had quite a weekend this week. My Friday was more eventful than I had hoped it would be. I went to visit a friend of mine who has a premature baby and she was having a bad day. My day ended up being a bit scary as well. Read the article I wrote about my experiences on Friday. I learned a lot about life that day. The Preciousness and Frailness of Life

The breath of life is so valuable, yet so many people take it for granted. Yesterday, I was faced with the preciousness of and frailness of life on two occasions, and it really made me think about life’s value.
Yesterday morning I visited one of my friends and their premature baby who was born at 1 lb. 1 oz. She is now 3 lbs. 13 oz., but still struggling to stay alive. Their latest scare as of yesterday involved her ventilator tube that is helping her breath being yanked out and her heart rate and oxygen levels plummeting. She turned blue of course and her mom watched in horror. She is an amazing little girl, a living miracle. She has come so far yet has so far yet to go, but she hangs on to her own little life as so many pray that she will be able to live it to the fullest. We all know that God has a purpose for her and her life.
Later that day I get a phone call from my younger brother. My mom had been taken to the emergency room. Her heart was racing and she could not get it to stop. An hour later, as I watched her lie on the emergency room table, I could see the fear in her eyes as her heart still raced and her blood pressure surged way too high. Doctors finally had to give her some medication, which stops your heart and allows it to restart in order to obtain a normal heartbeat. My mom described how her oxygen level dropped and she felt like she could not breath as the medication took effect. Again, life was proven to me to be so precious and fragile.
Today I am thankful. Thankful that my mom is doing well and is home from the hospital now. Thankful that my 6-week-old baby does not have to live life everyday attached to tubes and lying helplessly in an incubator. I, at the same time, feel helpless. Helpless to help my friend who has to watch her daughter in this most fragile state and not know what the next moment will have her to endure. However, I know that God is in control; that He is the provider of life and that He is the ultimate decision maker of when He will choose to take the very life that He provided. It is all in His hands.
We as His children must be thankful for Him allowing us yet another day of life, with its trials and complications. No matter what it is still life, and that it is precious.

“Somebody”

Somebody said it takes about six weeks to get back to normal after you’ve had a baby .. Somebody doesn’t know that once you’re a mother, “normal” is history.
Somebody said you learn how to be a mother by instinct, somebody never took a three-year-old shopping.
Somebody said being a mother is boring … Somebody never rode in a car driven by a teenager with a driver’s’ permit.
Somebody said “good” mothers never raise their voices somebody never came out the back door just in time to see her child hit a golf ball through the neighbor’s kitchen window.
Somebody said you don’t need an education to be a mother…. Somebody never helped a fourth grader with his math.
Somebody said you can’t love the second child as much as you love the first … Somebody doesn’t have two children.
Somebody said a mother can find all the answers to her child-rearing questions in the books…. somebody never had a child stuff beans up his nose or in his
ears.
Somebody said the hardest part of being a mother is labor and delivery….somebody never watched her “baby” get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten or on a plane headed for military “boot camp.”
Somebody said your mother knows you love her, so you don’t need to tell her…. somebody isn’t a mother.

Hello Everyone!
I’ve been spending the past few days trying to get all my summer clothes out and my winter and maternity clothes put away. Actually, I have sold quite a few of my maternity items on EBAY since we don’t plan to have any more children. It was a great way to make a little extra cash as well. I’m also trying to determine if I’ll ever get back in those favorite pair of jeans. Hopefully in a few more weeks.
We sure do put ourselves through a lot in the name of looking good don’t we ladies. I am sharing an article with you that I found interesting on beauty. Enjoy!

Devotion
Beauty is only skin deep. How many times have you heard that saying? Or beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are so many thoughts about beauty. Beauty is something we as women struggle with; we often compare ourselves to others and think that we don’t measure up. We must remember that we are created in God’s image. Jesus living in us is what makes us beautiful, inside and out. It is important to teach our daughters where beauty truly comes from.

Many young women and teenagers are placing great value on looking like the latest Cover Girl model, and placing little or no value on spiritual health. I agree, it is important to feel good about the way we look, but I think the culture is going a bit too far. It is far more important for young girls to feel good about who they are on the inside, wouldn’t you agree?

What are we teaching our youth of today? Have we, as parents contributed to this self-indulgent need to look perfect, be thin as a rail, and wear expensive adornment to be somebody? Have we taught our children that beauty starts on the outside? Are we telling them that it is more important to “look” good rather than “be” good?

I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold and pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. (1 Timothy 2: 9, 10)

It is not a sin to get a nose job, and wear expensive clothing and jewelry, but as we all know, real beauty comes from the inside of a person, not what they are wearing or how beautiful they look. A modest, kind teenager will gain more respect and kindness from others than one who dresses in expensive clothes and is stuck-up and hateful. It all begins in the attitude.

The standards of what society deems important is not what God deems important. As a teenager, I strived to be accepted by others, but I never really loved myself. Because of this, I never became the young person God created me to be. I wasted my teenage years trying to impress others, but that wasn’t who I was. It wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I realized God’s love for me. It is never too late to become the person God intends you to be, but if you wait, it may be too late.

It is important to wear clean clothes and be well groomed, but it is not important to have big breasts, a twenty-five inch waist, full lips, and a perfect nose. God made you the unique and special young girl that you are. Your nose, eyes, lips and chin is your uniqueness that sets you apart from looking like everyone else. Accept what God has given you and be content to be who it is you are.

…Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (1 Peter 3:4)

It’s easy to be beautiful on the outside, but it is not an easy thing to be beautiful on the inside. Being beautiful on the inside is a bit more difficult to accomplish. It takes great wisdom and understanding to realize the special person you are regardless how much money you have, how skinny you are, or what you wear. Those things don’t make someone be great. Those things do not make someone successful. Those things are only a cover up to hide the true self. To be great and to be successful is to know God! Your true value in God is what’s important not what others think of you.

Please don’t fall for the “appearances trap”, and become too obsessed with fashion and looking like the latest cover girl model. Dress to please God not others. Of course, hygiene and neatness is always important, but even more important is your inner spiritual self and attitude towards others and God. Strive to be the person God wants you to be not what the world is enticing you to be.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is –his pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone had a great week. Mine was a bit slow due to the weather cooling off and my not wanting to get Lily out in the cool air. We stayed home a lot but I got some writing done at least.
I am definitely looking forward to warmer temperatures. It will be nice to get out and about with the kids. I am also looking forward to some speaking engagements I have coming up. I am blessed to have three opportunities lined up for May and 1 for June. One is a ladies tea, another is a Girls in Action sleepover, the third is a Girl’s Retreat for Jr. High and high school girls and finally a Women’s Missionary Union meeting in June., quite a variety and wonderful opportunities to serve as well.
What are everyone’s plans for Mother’s Day? It’s just around the corner you know. Why not plan some mother/daughter time? This week’s issue will give you some great ideas.

Mother Daughter Bonding Ideas
Ways to celebrate Mother’s day with your daughter:

1) Dinner at a favorite restaurant.
2) Movie night – rent a chick flick and plop down on the couch with some popcorn and candy.
3) Pampering party- gather up supplies for makeovers, pedicures, manicures, facials and more and pamper each other.
4) Go Shopping – Don’t all girls love to shop?
5) Go horseback riding. The great outdoors is a wonderful place for mom and daughter to bond.
6) Volunteer. Serving together is a great way to connect. Try the local nursing home, hospital or mission. They are always looking for volunteers.
7) Workout – Go for a jog, put on some tunes and do some aerobics, go for a swim, rollerblading or biking in the park.
Cook dinner together. Begin by shopping for the ingredients to your favorite meal, mom chooses the main course and daughter chooses dessert.
9) Scrapbooking day – Gather all those family photos, head to the scrapbook store or section in your local Walmart, gather supplies and scrap away!
10) Take a class – Lot’s of places offer yoga classes, pottery classes, cooking classes and more, find one in your local area and learn together.

Hello Everyone!
Wow, another month has passed us by, my how time flies. I cannot believe my daughter is already 2 weeks old. Every mom I run into out there assures me of how fast she’ll become 18, including my own mom, who told me this week that the worst day of her life was the day I left home, my wedding day. I was married at 19 so I jokingly said, so, I guess I have 19 years at least huh? I sure hope so. I also want to be my little girl’s best friend. My mother is one of my best friends. My husband always tells me I can’t have more than one, but I do. He is my best friend and so is my mother. The two relationships are very different of course, so my thoughts are, why can’t they both exist, of course they can.
This week I’d like you to think about that… “Are you your daughter’s best friend?” I hope that you can say, “yes”. However, if not, maybe you can think of how you can truly become that. I was talking with a mom this week of a 20-year-old daughter, she shared with me that her daughter was her best friend. She shared with me things that they did together. Her daughter still lives at home, and they stay up late at night chatting, she said I have to tell her “you know I have to go to work tomorrow.” Her daughter also brings her boyfriend over to their house for family dinner and to sit and chat with her parents on the couch. These things help them to bond as a family, as a mother and daughter and are in my eyes reasons why they are “best friends”.
I am proud to have a mother who I can truly call “my best friend”. I hope you are blessed with the same.

From Mother to Daughter

As the mom of two girls, it’s hard not to notice the messages our world sends women regarding how they should look. I’ve fought against allowing my own heart to be influenced by the world’s standards up till this point. But I realize I need to be proactive at this stage of my life to help arm my daughters’ with a strong sense of image and self-confidence too. Without it, they will easily fall prey while listening to outside influences that could potentially be extremely harmful to their self-esteem and image.

I want my daughters’ to feel good about who they are as individual people. I realize that they are watching me and observing how I feel about myself as a person and as a woman. And because I see them wanting to learn from me, I am trying to use that curiosity to my advantage.

I try very hard not to criticize my looks or weight in front of my girls. The world is so “look-oriented” enough without them seeing me trying to fit into a certain mold or standard. I know that if they see me desiring unhealthy expectations for myself or dwelling on these thoughts too much, that they too, will inherit these unhealthy standards for themselves. I want to nurture – not destroy – their body image!

I am trying to openly show my children that no one is perfect. I have flaws, weaknesses, and things that I need to personally work on. And it’s okay! I just need to remember and make sure that I work towards my personal goals in a healthy way.

Mothers pass a great deal more than they realize onto their daughters’ lives and seal it into their hearts. I hope that I can bring a sense of reality and balance into my daughters’ souls so that I can instill positive long-term images and effects on who they are and how they view themselves. The reward will be theirs (and mine as I observe solid, grounded, content young women,) if they can learn how to feel good in their own skin….no matter what the size.

Hello Everyone! I write you now as I hold a precious almost 8 lb. baby girl, Lillian Claire Avant, or “Lily” as we fondly refer to her. She made her arrival, Friday, March 16, 2007 at 1:14 pm. She was 7 pounds 14.8 ounces and 19 inches long. She has dark hair, like her daddy and dark blue eyes.
Mommy, Daddy, and Big Brother Baker have been home with her all last week. Daddy goes back to work today. Mommy is nervous about keeping up with a 3 year old and caring for a newborn. I know though that many other mommas out there do it, so I should be able to as well.
I am looking forward to getting back to work on my ministry. My maternity leave from church will end on April 27 and I will officially be home for good. This is such a good feeling to know that my children will not have to be cared for by anyone but mommy. I really enjoy being a mommy more than I could ever imagine. Dare to be Different

When I was a teenager I just wanted to fit in. I thought to myself most days, “Why can’t I be more like ________?” (You know her girls, so fill in the blank). To have the shoes she wore, or perfect skin, or just the right haircut would make everything perfect. I would strive to be more and more like her. I soon discovered that it was not really helping because no one was taking notice that I was dressed like her, or wore my hair in the same style.
So, I soon gave up, and went on to try to be more like “me”. Then, I began to get more and more involved in my church youth group. I was 13 or 14 and all my friends hung out at church, going to Bible study, youth choir, and to my youth minister’s house after church or we’d make a trip to Taco Bell in the next town. Those were good times.
The best part is that in those Bible studies I learned, that I did not really want to be like that girl at school, I wanted to be different. The Bible tells us that we are “made in the image of God.” This is a true privilege that only humans can claim. When God created the world, humans were the only part of creation that he created in his image. He also made each of us unique. The only person God wants us to try and be more like is his Son, Jesus Christ. When I discovered this truth, I began to pursue it, with all that I was. I began to “dare to be different” from my friends or peers. Surprisingly, this was much more fulfilling than trying to be like the girl at school. I began to stand out. People took much more notice that I was doing things different than when I was conforming to the norm. It might not have always been easy, but it was the way to go. I challenge you to take the road less traveled. Because ” For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” Matthew 7:13 (NIV). I know that you will benefit from taking the proper path, I sure did!

Hello Everyone! I have to begin this with a sincere apology. Last week I was unable to get this ezine out because my family and I were suffering from the flu. It has been a long couple of weeks. We actually got sick on the Monday that I sent out my last ezine, almost 2 weeks ago now.

We are now recovering, and still anxiously awaiting our new arrival, our precious baby girl, Lily. The weather is beginning to feel more and more like Spring, with the last few days reaching into the 70s. It has been beautiful some days and stormy others.

Good News

Once again, one of my articles is being featured at the Christian Article Bank. This weeks article is “Impacting Your Daughter for the Next Generation. Head on over there to check it out!
Another bit of news about me and answered prayer is that I have officially resigned from my position as Youth / Children’s Director of Carrollton Baptist Church. The reason that this is good news is because it is a result of my taking a step of faith and following God as He has been calling me to do for quite some time. The resignation went well. The church blessed me with 6 weeks paid maternity leave and insurance paid through the month of April. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! After 4 ½ years I will be stepping down from the staff there but my family and I are staying there as members and will be volunteering in roles in the church as we feel the Lord leads. This I am very happy about!

Building Teen Character: Volunteering for Community Service

Volunteering in the community is a great way to serve the people in the area where you live. Many non-profit organizations are run by people who give a lot of their own time and money to make your community a better place, and volunteers help these services to continue.

In addition, community service is a great way for teenagers to become aware of needs outside themselves. Don’t wait until your teenagers are required to perform mandatory community service to help them get more involved in your community.

Our first experience with volunteer work came about when our daughter was about 12. I was working full time, and we were looking for something for her to occupy her time during the summer. We contacted our local “volunteer center” to find out about available volunteer opportunities in our community. Through that center we found out about a local day camp for disabled children. It is administered by adults but almost completely run by teenagers. The older kids (ages 16-21) are employed by the organization as camp counselors, and the younger teens (ages 12-16) are volunteers. Each disabled child has a teen “pal” for all activities. They go to the park, go swimming, and a variety of other activities for about 4 hours a day. Volunteers sign up for 1 week at a time, and can volunteer all summer if they want.

This kind of volunteer work isn’t for everyone, of course, but our daughter had a great time volunteering for this organization and worked there every summer for four years. A lot of the volunteers come back as paid counselors when they turn 16. The younger teens also love hanging out with the older teens, and the disabled kids love all the attention. This service gives the parents of these kids very needed time off and is a wonderful resource in our community, while also offering a unique experience for the volunteers.

There are many other types of volunteer work. Other types of services our daughter has been involved with:

* Your local humane society is a great place to volunteer as a family. My daughter and I used to go to our humane society and play with the cats and take dogs for walks. They called this “pet socialization”, so that the animals would have an easier transition into new homes. We had a great time doing this together. Our daughter also organized her own yard sale and published a newsletter for kids to raise money for the humane society.

* When our daughter was 16, she became involved in a teen “suicide hotline” program sponsored by our community. She went through an intensive training program to teach her how to talk to teens who are considering suicide. Teens volunteer to man a phone line in 4-hour shifts.

* Local churches are great resources for volunteer opportunities. For several years I was a youth group leader in our daughter’s high school youth group. One year we spent a week in Billings, Montana, working in their homeless shelter and food bank. To me this was quite an eye-opening experience, especially talking to and sharing experiences with the people who work at these places every day. Last year our daughter spent a week in Idaho fixing up and updating several schools, and this year she is travelling to Honduras for two weeks.

The services performed through volunteer work are only a portion of the benefits of volunteering time in the community. Teenagers by nature are very often self-focused and need to be offered opportunities to reach out of themselves and help others. The earlier they learn to do these things the more natural it will become for them later in life. Other benefits of volunteer work are valuable experience for applying for jobs and college scholarships.

Hello Everyone! I hope that you will be excited to know that this ezine will now be a weekly publication rather than just monthly. After a great response to the first issue sent out on Feb. 5, I have decided to publish weekly editions.
I trust everyone is staying warm. Here in Mississippi the weather is finally cold. We have been in the 20’s most nights this week. I have tried to stay out of the cold as much as possible.
This week my son is going to be going to a Super Sibs class for first time siblings. He will soon be the big brother of a little sister. In the class he will learn to hold her, feed her, help change her diaper, and the do’s and don’ts of being around a baby. This will be fun and exciting for him.
We have only four more weeks now till Baby Lily is due! Pray she makes a safe and healthy arrival.
For all you moms out there, I know that you can sympathize with these last few weeks of my pregnancy. I am running low on energy and ready for her to be here.

Good News

I have some good news to share with all my readers. I had the privilege of doing an interview this past Monday on the Power of Word online radio show located at Blog Talk Radio.com Rebecca Simmons interviewed me. Devotion

What would you say is your greatest talent? Being able to fold laundry, talk on the phone, change a dirty diaper, and plan your next meal all at the same time? Just kidding, that is just being a mom.
Nevertheless, we all have God given talents and abilities that the Lord has blessed us with that we should be using. Not only do you have those talents, but your daughter does as well. In fact, both of you have God given talents and abilities. Plus if you are a Christian, you have spiritual gifts. Isn’t that exciting? To me it sure is.
Recently, I had the opportunity to take a class on the Spiritual Gifts of Women. I gained a great deal of insight from it on what are our natural talents and abilities, and what our spiritual gifts are. These are often confused and they are actually quite different. I hope you will grab your daughter, sit down and using the following information and your own Bible, study and begin to discover just what your natural talents and abilities are as well as your spiritual gifts, making a commitment to use them all for the glory of God.
Maybe you already know what they are, maybe you think you do, or maybe you are clueless. Either way, you can experience what God might be saying to you through a little time with your daughter and in His Word. I feel it will be a rewarding experience for the both of you.
Here is a list of the differences between spiritual gifts and natural talents and abilities. Then you will find listed the Scripture references to look to for more insight on spiritual gifts. Enjoy!

Spiritual Gifts Natural Abilities & Talents
A gift that comes to individual believers to supernaturally enable them to do that which God has called them to do. Natural Talent is from God, but through parents.
When you are using your spiritual gift, you are worshiping God. Natural Talents are from birth.
Spiritual Gift is from God, independent of parents. Natural gifts are to benefit others on a natural level. When used alongside spiritual gifts this can be a spiritual benefit.
Spiritual Gifts are from new birth. Natural gifts we recognize, develop and exercise in your own power, through training, practice.
Spiritual gifts are to benefit others on a spiritual level. Natural talents are dedicated by believers to God for his use and glory, but not necessarily always.
Spiritual gifts we recognize, develop and exercise them in His power.
Spiritual gifts are dedicated to God fro his use and glory.

Welcome, Welcome everyone! I am beyond excited about this, my first issue of my ezine, “Heart to Heart: Mom – Daughter Connection. What a fabulous opportunity this is for me to connect with all you mom’s of daughters out there. You may think that you will be gaining insight from me about your girls, but I am hoping to gain some insight from you as well, because I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my precious little girl, whom we are calling Lily. She is due to be born Sunday, March 18, exactly 6 weeks from today. I absolutely cannot wait. I have always wanted a little girl. However, I do love and cherish my little man, Baker, who is three, he is going to be a great “big” brother.
I have a request of all of you. Please email me your insights if you are the mom of more than one child. Give me your best advice on preparing my little man for the arrival of his little sister. I want to make sure that I don’t’ neglect him as I become a mom of two, but at the same time I am able to enjoy my new little one as well. My View of the News

In this section each month, I hope to keep you abreast to the topics in the news that have an impact upon your daughter. I will emphasize different age groups of girls each month. Some months, this section might only have to do with those things that are affecting teens other times it might affect girls of all ages.

This month’s topic will most likely deal with teens and possibly preteens. Do your daughters have un-supervised access to the Internet on a daily basis? If so, do you as a mom know what sites your daughter frequents online. A good way to check is to check the history on your computer’s Internet browser. If this is not something you currently know how to do, you should check into finding out how this can be done.

As a youth minister for 5 years I have tried to stay up on what is popular with teens especially in the fields of music, TV, communication and the Internet, the world’s newest and most popular form of entertainment and communication. Yes, today teens no longer communicate verbally through phone lines, nor do they even choose to talk sometimes when they are face to face, rather they would rather text each other the message via cell phone so no one else knows what they are saying. This to me can become a scary thought.

Even scarier is the access to which literally 100 million people across the world have to your teen via the Internet superhighway on what is known as My Space. MySpace is the largest and most expansive social networking website on the Internet. MySpace allows its users to post pictures, personal contact info and more via their very own “page” on the web. Don’t get me wrong, I do not think it’s entirely bad, however I have had my own share of being contacted by those whom I didn’t care to communicate with, via this social network.

The following are some tips for safeguarding or having your teen safeguard them if they do choose to use MySpace.

Remember:

· Any personal information you give out online in public forums such as e-mail listservs and message boards can be used against you.

· If someone is harassing you, a good line of defense is keeping evidence. Create a folder and move all offensive e-mails, messages, and copies of Web page files into it. You don’t have to read it, but keeping copies of everything will help your Internet service provider identify the offender and help your case.

· Tell your parents, teachers, a coach or counselor about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

· Screen names can be very revealing– sometimes too much so. To avoid being harassed by cyber stalkers, be very selective about how you present yourself, and stay safe by choosing gender-neutral usernames and e-mail addresses.

· Don’t respond and don’t engage harassers– responding to attacks can make it worse. Keep copies of any harassment in a file and talk to an adult about it.

· IM services and message boards usually have a function to block unwanted users from contacting you. If someone makes you uncomfortable, use the blocking function, and don’t answer messages from people you don’t know.

Devotion

A girls relationship with her mother is one of the most important relationships in their life. As a youth and children’s minister, I have done a great amount of research on who affects the lives of children and teens. Profoundly, every study shows that parents have the greatest affect upon the lives of their children, greater than peers, friends, teachers or others in their lives such as ministers.
I consider myself lucky that I have and have always had an excellent relationship with both my mother and my father. I reflect on my relationship with my mom and realize that it has shaped who I have become today. My mom was always open and honest with me about almost every topic or issue that I faced in life, from being scared of thunder when I was younger, to being the only girl in my class who couldn’t stay out till midnight in ninth grade. My mom was also brutally honest when it came to issues such as sex, drugs, and alcohol.
One thing my parents did without fail was to back up their discipline with Scripture. An easy way to share with each other what the Bible says about certain issues is to search the Scriptures for answers together when an issue arises in their life. My parents and I did this on a regular basis. I would often want them to “prove” that the Bible really said something so they would get down the Bible, search the concordance, and show me the Scripture. Today, as a result I can tell someone almost immediately what the Bible says about certain topics as I have been shown it myself, many times.

After all the Bible says in Proverbs, “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he shall not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. I also find evidence of the practices my parents used in Deuteronomy 6:4-8

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Finding evidence of the way we should deal with our problems and issues in God’s word can strengthen our relationships with our children. I am thankful for parents and especially a mother who boldly proclaimed Scripture to me in times of trouble and was not afraid to look for it when she was unsure.

Some Keys to Quiet Time

Quiet time or time alone with God is so important to all of us. I believe that it is how we as Christians grow in Christ. Becoming a Christian should be more to us than just “fire insurance” or a way to stay out of hell. I think it is important to emphasize to our children that being a Christian involves more than just accepting Jesus. It is about forming and growing a “relationship” with God. As a youth/children’s minister, I used this example many times. If you have any relationship, whether it is with a friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend, how do you get to know that person, through spending time with them right? And if you don’t spend time with them you cannot “get to know them”. The same goes with our relationship with God. We must spend time with Him in order to get to know Him, and there is no way that we will get to know Him if we do not spend time with Him. It is that simple. That is why our quiet time is so important.

The Christian life is a growth process, in order to grow we must spend time reading God’s word, talking to God, listening to God, memorizing Scripture, applying Scripture to our lives, all of these things we can do during our quiet time with God each day. There are some several “keys” to having a quiet time; I would like to briefly share some of them with you.

Keys to Quiet Time:

?Find a special place to have it.
?Bring your Bible, pen, paper and an open mind.
?Set aside a specific time each day.
?Be prepared to hear from God.
